Abstract

1340273 Valves WHITEY RESEARCH TOOL CO 24 May 1971 [28 May 1970] 16662/71 Heading F2V In a rotary ball valve wherein the ball 28 is encapsulated in a plastics two-piece packing 34, 36, preferably of P.T.F.E. the packing is provided with counter bores 46 in apertures in alignment with inlets and outlets 18, 20, 22 so that a metal ring 42 extends in each counterbore between the inner wall of the housing and a lip 48 of the packing between the ring and the ball. The packing is loaded by a gland member 60 having therein a P.T.F.E. bush 66 which is compressed on to the integral ball stem 30 by a nut 70 acting through a washer 68. A handle 74 is connected by screw 80 to the stem and on release of the handle nut 70 may be turned by rods extending through bores (72) in the handle into bores 76 in the nut. Discs (40) may be placed between the inner wall of the housing and the ball similarly to the rings 42 so as to prevent extrusion of the packing into the ball opening in closed position. A disc (40) may replace the ring 42 connected to flow passage 18 so that the ball rotates thereon, alternatively this disc may be integral and act as a trunnion. Packing material may extend into a gap between the disc and ball or the integral disc and housing.
