Abstract
824,706. Valves. HYDRIL CO. May 29, 1957 [Aug. 2, 1956], No. 17025/57. Class 135. A valve includes a body member 11, Fig. 1, having a chamber 13 with inlet and outlet 14 and containing a stopper member, e.g. a gate valve, Fig. 9, or rotary spherical valve 15, one of the members having an annular cavity 44 around the chamber flow zone which is blanked by the other member when the stopper closes the valve and contains a packing 40 one face of which is pressed against the other member, when the valve is closed, by a thrust ring 41 acting on the opposite face, and a control for operating the valve and actuating the thrust ring. A roller 56 interlocks a manual screw 30 and a gear hub 55 so that rotation of handle 29 turns the gears 26, 28 and closes the valve. When the valve is closed, roller 56 enters a body recess to lock gear 28 and free screw 30, whereby continued rotation of screw 30 rotates thrust ring 41 about the flow axis 37 by engaging a cam 49 on the ring. As the ring rotates it is moved axially towards the stopper by balls 51 engaging cams 52 on the body and ring, and thrusts the packing into sealing with the stopper. On opening the valve, shoulders 60 engage corresponding shoulders on the gear hub 55 for unlocking the hub from the body. In the gate valve of Fig. 9, rotation of handle 89 axially moves screw 90 and valve stem 171 via detents 98 until the valve is closed, after which the screw collar 97 pushes detents 98 into recesses 99 so that continued rotation of handle 89 moves the screw 90 independently of stem 171 so that a cam 86 engages a cam 87 on thrust rings 80 whereby the rings rotate and, due to the balls 84 engaging thrust ring cams 85, move axially to seal packings 82 on the seats 71.
