Abstract
A hydrocarbon composition of improved oxidation stability and colour stability comprises a major proportion of a liquid or solid hydrocarbon and a minor proportion of a phenothiazine derivative having a benzyl or substituted benzyl group in the 10-position. The hydrocarbon may be a petroleum hydrocarbon oil such as gasoline, kerosine, jet fuel, transformer oil, turbine oil or mineral lubricating oil, or a wax such as slack wax, slop wax, paraffin wax or microcrystalline wax. The phenothiazine derivative may have the formula <FORM:0824521/III/1> where R is a benzyl or substituted benzy group. The substituted benzyl group may carry alkyl groups (e.g. methyl or ethyl) as substituents. The phenothiazine derivative may carry substituents (e.g. alkyl groups) in the positions 1 to 4 or 6 to 9. In the examples, 10-benzyl phenothiazine is added to refined mineral oil. The effect of replacing the 10-benzyl phenothiazine by 10-nonyl phenothiazine, 1,2-benzophenothiazine, 3-nonoxy phenothiazine, phenyl alpha or beta naphthylamine, or phenothiazine itself, is described.ALSO:A hydrocarbon composition of improved oxidation stability and colour stability comprises a major proportion of a liquid or solid hydrocarbon and a minor proportion of a phenothiazine derivative having a benzyl or substituted benzyl group in the 10-position. The hydrocarbon may be one obtained by polymerizing an alkene such as ethylene and/or propylene, especially by the low-pressure process employing as catalyst (1) a Ziegler catalyst; (2) a mixture comprising aluminium trichloride, titanium tetrachloride and aluminium powder; (3) chromium oxide on a 90% silica-10% alumina support containing, if desired, a minor proportion of strontium oxide; or (4) an oxide of a Group VI metal on a support in the presence, if desired, of an alkali metal. The phenothiazine derivative may have the formula <FORM:0824521/IV (a)/1> where R is a benzyl or substituted benzyl group. The substituted benzyl group may carry alkyl groups (e.g. methyl or ethyl) as substituents. The phenothiazine derivatives may carry substituents (e.g. alkyl groups) in the positions 1 to 4 or 6 to 9. In an example, Ziegler polyethylene containing 10-benzyl phenothiazine is converted into sheeting by hot milling and pressing. The effect of replacing the 10-benzyl phenothiazine by di-o-cresyl propane is described. Specification 799,823 is referred to.
