824,228. Calculating-apparatus. DIRKS, G. Aug. 1, 1957 [May 10, 1956], No. 14497/56. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XVI] The carriage of a typewriter or like machine, as it moves from one position to the next, generates a pulse 3 connected to a multi-element gas discharge counting tube 1 whose output lines 2/1-2/n are connected to a switching device 9 comprising a number of horizontal lines interconnected to a group of vertical lines 11/1-11/n, each connected to a second counting device 18. When a voltage occurs simultaneously from both counters, outputs 12/1-12/n, according to whether they have a connecting lead 13, have an increased potential which determines a series of functions in a data processing unit. The output lines 2 from the counter 1 are connected to three sets of plug sockets 6, 7 and 8 through isolating diodes 34. Plug wires 16 connect the circuits to a group of trigger circuits 17 in any desired sequence while plug wires 25 are connected to trigger circuits 23 which determine the potential of one of a group of output leads 22 which control selection of a particular track of a magnetic drum storage device. The plug sockets 8 may be connected in any desired sequence to input leads 26 of a comparison device 28 to which is also connected a further counter 30 which is pulse operated from a line 32. The counter 1 has a second pulse line 5 which causes subtraction in the counting tube 1. Specifications 786,021, 818,623 and 824,227 are referred to.
