Abstract

Substantially clear and transparent polyethylene sheets and films are made by incorporating in polyethylene, having an average molecular weight of 20,000 to 35,000 (determined by osmotic measurements), from 0.02 to 0.2% by weight of an unsaturated aliphatic fatty acid amide of 12-22 carbon atoms containing a single ethylenic bond, extruding the molten polyethylene through a die orifice to form a sheet or film having a temperature of 230-330 DEG C., preferably 250-300 DEG C., drawing the freshly formed sheet or film through an air path 2-18 inches long out of contact with any solid object and at the same time reducing the thickness of the sheet or film to 0.001-0.01 inch by stretching, solidifying the sheet or film by cooling it to below 50 DEG C., preferably to 0-25 DEG C., and passing the solidified sheet or film to a take-up device. The polyethylene may contain a plasticizer, such as polyisobutylene. In the example, a polyethylene having an average molecular weight of 28,000 and containing 0.1% by weight of n-octadecenamide is extruded at 250 DEG C. in the form of sheet through a narrow slot-shaped die first along an air path 4 inches long, and then into a bath of water at 40 DEG C. Thereafter the film is passed through squeeze rollers to remove excess water and is drawn by means of pull-rollers to a wind-up roll. The finished film is clear and transparent and is 0.0015 inch thick. Specification 694,870 is referred to.
