Abstract

Sheets and films of organic thermoplastic material such as celluloid, rubber, or synthetic resins are extruded by means of an extruder 1 provided with an extension barrel 4 enclosing a metering screw or screws 7 and having one or more extrusion orifices 8 in the form of slits, the material being conveyed along the length of the slit or slits by the metering screw. A smearhead 6 may be provided between the <PICT:0682543/IV (a)/1> extrusion screw 2 and the metering screw 7 and the two screws may be integral with each other. In a modified form of apparatus, the extension barrel has two metering screws in alignment fed from their remote ends and forming conjointly one continuous sheet. Alternatively, a metering screw having left- and right-handed screw portions extending from its centre may be fed from a central extruder placed at right angles to the metering screw. The extrusion orifice may be straight or curved and may have lips or extensions. It is preferably formed with a tapered portion 10 leading to a parallel-sided portion 8. Correction of the thickness of the sheet at any point in its width may be achieved p by non-uniform heating of the extension barrel, by using a tapering screw, by altering the width of an adjustable die, or by adjusting the take-off rate. The extruded sheet may be removed by haul-off mechanism or by gravity, the take-off speed being adjusted to achieve the correct amount of drawing. The sheet may be re-shaped whilst hot or may be cooled by air currents. it may be bonded whilst still molten to sheets of paper, cloth, cork or metal by means of nip rollers. A composition comprising polyvinyl chloride calcium stearate and diphenylthiourea may be extruded by the method.
