Abstract
1,253,393. Extruding thermoplastics tubes and films. PROSYN S.A. 17 Oct., 1969 [22 Oct., 1968], No. 51067/69. Headings B5A and B5B. In the production of thermoplastics tubular material which may be of film thickness, i.e. 0À01-0À25 mm., tubular extrudate 7 from an extrusion head 2 is cooled externally by air delivered from a rotating ring 6 and internally by contact with a cooled mandrel 4, the air from ring 6 being directed to produce a zone of reduced pressure between the annulus of air and the extrudate and upstream of the point where the air contacts the extrudate, the air within chamber 19 being cooled by mandrel 4 to precool the internal surface of the extrudate, and the pressure inside chamber 19 being adjusted in conjunction with the zone of reduced pressure to achieve a required diameter of the extrudate prior to its contact with the mandrel. Ring 6 is adjustable to modify the size of its air outlet. Coolant, e.g. water, is delivered to mandrel 4, Fig. 3, via conduit 14 and removed via conduit 15. Air pressure in chamber 19 is adjusted via ducts 17, 18 and any air carried forward by the extrudate to chamber 20 downstream of mandrel 4 is removed via conduit 13. Mandrel 4, which is axially adjustable, carries a flattening device comprising shoes 22 movable by reciprocation of a piston-like member 25. Downstream of the flattening device are haul-off rolls 9, Fig. 2, and a wind-up spool (not shown). To distribute any irregularities in the product over the width of the spool, rolls 9 are reciprocated or the mandrel and/or extrusion head are rotated. The apparatus is fully automatic being controlled from a panel 11, Fig. 2, and Fig. 1 (not shown), which is shown diagrammatically connected by lines (a-g) to the areas where adjustment may be made.
