Abstract

823,931. Laminating apparatus. CHAMBON Ltd. July 20, 1956 [July 21, 1955], No. 21085/55. Class 140. Material suitable for the manufacture of envelopes or cartons having transparent windows is made by feeding a web of paper or carton material 1 formed with apertures through the nips of feed rollers 2, 3 and uniting rollers 12, 13, and uniting thereto in the nip of rolls 12, 13, sections severed from a web 19 of material such as regenerated cellulose drawn from a roll 20 by feed rolls 21 rotating at a lower peripheral speed than rollers 2, 3, 12, 13. As the web 19 advances over a table 22 and a fixed knife 16, slip occurs between the web and faster moving roller 13 until a knife 15 mounted in the roller 13 meets the fixed knife 16, thus severing the web. The leading edge of the severed section lies, at the instant of severing, immediately in advance of apertures 17 in roller 13 through which suction is applied. An endless band 23 running on rollers 24 at the same peripheral speed as roller 13 assists in feeding the severed section to the nip of rollers 12, 13 where the two layers are united by crimping, heat-sealing, or by means of a previously-applied adhesive. The roller 2 may be provided with cutting blades 4 arranged to cut rectangular apertures in web 1 as it is fed. The apertured web may be coated with adhesive by a roller 5 the surface of which is either in positive relief, or, as shown, in negative relief 6, so as to apply adhesive in a strip immediately surrounding the apertures in the web. The roller 5 is fed by a roller 7 with adhesive from a trough 8 and a blade 9 scrapes roller 5 leaving adhesive in channel 6 only. Co-operating with roller 5 is a roller 10 carrying a pressure pad 11.
