Abstract

823,442. Locking devices. INTERNATIONAL STAPLE & MACHINE CO. Feb. 27, 1957, No. 6570/57. Class 80 (3). [Also in Group VII] A standard allowing manual positioning of an object such as a mount 23, Fig. 2, for an automatic machine 86 inserting staples into cartons on a conveyer table 24 comprises a hollow track 26 of rectangular section on which is vertically movable a wheeled carriage 21 counterbalanced by a weight 56 movable within the track 26, the carriage being normally clamped to the track by a pneumatic brake. The track 26 is secured to the conveyer table leg 25 by brackets 31, 32 surrounding circular sleeves on the track so that by slackening the brackets the track 26 may be rotated to adjust the mount 23 laterally. The front corner of the track 26 is engaged by upper and lower grooved wheels 45, 46 on the carriage while the two rear walls are engaged by adjustable wheels 35, 36, Fig. 8, mounted within the carriage 21. Compressed air is normally supplied through an electrically-operated valve to a spring-loaded piston 64 mounted in the carriage 21 and actuating a brake element 66 so that the track 26 is normally clamped between the element 66 and brake surfaces 41, 42 on the front plate of the carriage. When it is desired to adjust the height of the machine 86, Fig. 2, the brake is released by actuating a switchbutton 74 to cut off the air supply to the piston 64. After manual positioning of the mount 23 a manual switch Fig. 11 (not shown), is actuated to cause the stapling machine to be lowered by an air cylinder 82 until a contact switch 89 engages a carton, whereafter the downward movement is stopped and air is fed to the machine 86 to effect a stapling operation.
