Abstract

The product from a steam cracking process boiling below 450 DEG F is hydrogenated over a cobalt molybdate catalyst with 200-3500 SCF/B of hydrogen at 400-850 DEG F. and a pressure of 100-800 p.s.i.g. and a feed rate of 0.5-16 vol/vol/hr.; gum forming diolefines and olefines are partially hydrogenated and sulphur and oxygen compounds as destroyed. The process may be applied to a steam cracked product boiling in the range 86-392 DEG F. The hydrogen may be obtained from the steam cracking process or from a reforming process. The product preferably has an ASTM breakdown time of above 120 minutes or an ultraviolet extinction coefficient at 235 mm of below 0.95. In a preferred embodiment a naphtha is separated into light and heavy constituents, the heavy naphtha is hydroformed and the light naphtha steam cracked and hydrogenated according to the invention using hydrogen from the hydroforming process and the two products blended.ALSO:The product from a steam-cracking process boiling below 450 DEG F is hydrogenated over a cobalt molybdate catalyst with 200-3,500 SCF/B of hydrogen at 400-850 DEG F. and a pressure of 100-800 p.s.i.g. and a feed rate of 0.5-16 vol./vol./hr.; gum-forming diolefines and olefines are partially hydrogenated and sulphur and oxygen compounds as destroyed. The process may be applied to a steam-cracked product boiling in the range 86-392 DEG F. The hydrogen may be obtained from the steamcracking process or from a reforming process. The product preferably has an ASTM breakdown time of about 120 minutes or an ultraviolet extinction coefficient at 235 mn of below 0.95. In a preferred embodiment a naphtha is separated into light and heavy constituents, the heavy naphtha is hydroformed and the light naphtha steam cracked and hydrogenated according to the invention using hydrogen from the hydroforming process and the two products blended.
