Abstract

Propylene polymers boiling in the range 425-650 DEG F. are prepared by contacting a propylene-containing gaseous hydrocarbon feed with a liquid polymer consisting predominantly of propylene tetramer in the presence of a phosphoric acid polymerization catalyst at 175-325 DEG F. and 200-1800 p.s.i.g. The polymer : propylene weight ratio is preferably at least 0.5, e.g. 3 to 20 : 1. The catalyst may be 110-122% liquid phosphoric acid calculated as ortho-phosphoric acid, or an acid film disposed on quartz or a "solid" phosphoric acid type of catalyst. The propylene may be introduced at a space velocity of 0.1-5 volumes per volume of catalyst per hour. Product boiling below 425 DEG F. is recycled. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 800,708.
