Abstract

822,851. Fishing reels. BALL & CO. Ltd., G. F. May 30, 1958 [June 3, 1957], No. 17511/57. Class 48. In a fishing reel of the fixed spool type having a bail-shaped pick-up 12 carried by a flyer body 13, the line guide on the pick-up is a complete eye or ring 11 and, at casting, the pick-up is moved to a position (shown in chain lines) in which the eye 11 is coaxial with the fixed spool 10. The pick-up is moved from the reeling-in position (shown in full lines) to the casting position by a shell 17 which is slidably mounted on the flyer body 13 and is moved forwardly against spring action by a hand lever 18 pivoted on the reel casing. The ends of the pick-up are pivoted to the flyer body and near the ends the pick-up is bowed rearwardly to pass to the rear of pins 20 carried by the shell 17. When the shell 17 is moved forwardly its edge engages the bowed portions of the pick-up and in forcing the pick-up to its casting position it causes the bail to become tensioned so that it returns automatically to the reeling-in position when the hand lever 18 is released. The pick-up is retained in reeling- in position by a spring catch 23 secured to the flyer body and released by the edge of the shell 17.
