Abstract

<PICT:0822669/III/1> Leather workpieces are coated by advancing them in a flat condition at a constant speed on a conveyer 20 which is earthed through a spray chamber 15, directing a spray nozzle 24, 25 normal to and spaced from one surface of the workpieces and moving the nozzle back and forth across the path of travel of the workpieces in the chamber 15, and establishing an electrostatic field transversely of the conveyer adjacent the path of travel of the nozzle. In one embodiment, a nozzle 24, 25 is mounted at opposite ends of a pair of rotatable arms 22, 23 and a pair of arcuate grids 29, 30 each having a plurality of downwardly-directed needle-shaped electrodes is mounted on insulating supports 31 ... 34 from the roof of the chamber 15, the grids 29, 30 carrying a voltage of 90,000 to 150,000 through a transformer 37. Shields 38, 39 guard entrance and exit openings and the grids 29, 30 have shields 40 at each end. The nozzles operate only whilst over the conveyer 20, which is of the endless kind, and the grids 29, 30 may be energized continuously or only during operation of the nozzles. In a second embodiment, three downwardly-directed nozzles, spaced along the length of the conveyer, are reciprocated by an endless chain across the conveyer in a direction at right-angles to the direction of movement of the conveyer. Straight grids, corresponding to the grids 29, 30, are supported transversely of the conveyer. In both embodiments, the path of the nozzles lies in a horizontal plane a little below the plane of the grids.
