[Also in Group XL (b)] In an optical device for setting the carriage 1 of a machine-tool, light from a source 12, within a system of rotatable tubes 15, 16, 17, shines through peripheral slots 18, 19, 20 and through a slit 21 of a measuring scale 22, a lens 24, and is reflected by a prism 31 inside tubes 25, 26 to pass through slots thereon to fall upon a photo-cell 32 which controls movement of the carriage 1. Tubes 15, 16, 17 and 25, 26 have extensions at one end on which are marked digits represented by the respective units, tens and hundreds slots 18, 19 and 20. Tubes 15, 16, 17 are attached by bearings 14 to the carriage 1 which is moved by a spindle 4-driven by a motor adjusted in accordance with signals from the photo-cell 32. Light from the lamp 12a falling on another photo-cell 33 gives advance warning to slow the movement of the carriage 1 preparatory to its arrest by the pulse from the photo-cell 32. The tubes are made of glass with an opaque surface. The slots of tubes 15, 26 are in the form of a helix. A relay circuit operating the clutch of the gears driving spindle 4 is set out in the rest of Fig. 1 (not shown). Specification 803,205 also is referred to.
