Abstract

821,546. Making cartons. BERGSTEIN, R. M., and BERGSTEIN, F. D. Nov. 25, 1955 [May 26, 1955], No. 33917/55. Class 18. The ends of a tubular carton are sealed by placing it on a mandrel, folding in and sealing the bottom closure flaps on to the mandrel in conventional manner, pressing carton wall portions adjacent the other end into recesses in the mandrel to form inwardly sloping portions, turning outwardly flanges attached to these portions, and removing the carton from the mandrel and sealing end closure flaps on to the flanges. A carton body as in Fig. 3, but with flap 17 folded on to closure flap 15 from which it extends, is placed on a mandrel 21, and closure flaps 6-9, with adhesive applied as necessary, are folded down and sealed by a presser plate 24. L-shaped bars 44, 45 are advanced to press portions 78-80 of carton walls 2-4 into recesses in the mandrel. During this last operation flanges 10-12 are bent about the edges 67 of a vertically reciprocable plate 60, and after the members 44, 45 reach their innermost position, the plate 60 rises to press the flanges 10-12 into recesses 68 in there members, Fig. 6. Flaps 15, 17 are pressed together by a plate 70 advancing against the mandrel 21, adhesive having previously been applied to one of these flaps. The carbon is removed from the mandrel and placed in a jig, Figs. 12-14 (not shown) with the combined flaps 15, 17 but backwardly and positioned between a pair of co-acting dies, Figs. 12-15 (not shown) which produce a flared mouth 102 round the pouring opening 18. The carton is then placed in a further jig, Fig. 17, comprising stationary plates 103, 104 and a moveable right-angled plate 105, which engage and align the carton walls 1-4. Bars 111, 112, similar to the bars 44, 45 then advance to underline and support the flanges 10-12, and the flaps 15, 17 are folded down on to them with the closure tab 16 extending in the vertical plane. A vertically reciprocating pressure plate 116, Fig. 22, having a slot 120 through which the tab 16 is passed and a depression 121 to accommodate the pouring opening mouth, presses the flaps 15, 17 on to the flanges 10-12, previously coated with adhesive. Projections 122 on the bars 111, 112 ensure sealing at the corners 123 where there are only two thicknesses of material. The described mechanisms are hand operated but the method may be carried out by automatic means (not shown). A blank may be tubed on the mandrel instead of a carton body being applied to it. The carton ends may be further sealed by wax &c. poured into cover them, the flared pouring opening permitting formation of a plug which adhere to the tab 16 when it is raised. Specification 819,355 is referred to.
