Abstract

821,510. Broaching. SIMMONDS AEROCESSORIES Ltd. Dec. 16, 1957 [Dec. 21, 1956], No. 39111/56. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] A cutting element in strip form suitable for use as an abrading band or as a saw, and similar to that described in Specification 695,830, has one or both side edges cut away between at least some of the pairs of adjacent ridges to leave side cutting edges. As shown, the portion of the element adjacent the edge 2 is cut away in general sawtooth pattern to leave a series of side cutting edges 10a, 10b extending from the ridges 6 and lying level with and parallel to the sharpened edges 5 of the holes 4 and having the same rake and clearance and being sharpened. In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), side cutting edges are produced at every alternate rib by shearing the side edge 2 of the strip. In this case the side cutting edges are not sharpened. A modified cutting element, having side cutting edges adapted for use as a saw may be made as an endless band to act as an abrading band. Specification 666,573 also is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
