Abstract
821,148. Hopper level control. BAILEY METERS & CONTROLS Ltd. Sept. 6, 1957 [Sept. 6, 1956], No. 27338/56. Class 78 (1). [Also in Groups XVIII and XXXV] Apparatus for indicating the presence or absence at a chosen level of liquid in a tank or a body of material such as sand or coal in a hopper 2 comprises a mild steel rod 5 welded at its mid-point into a hole in a plate 4 which closes an aperture 3 in the container wall at the chosen level, the end of the rod projecting into the container. A mild steel casing 7 is secured to the plate 4 and is of such length that the outer end of the rod 5 projects through an aperture 8 in the end of the casing. A solenoid 9 surrounds a part of the rod within the casing 7 and is energized by an oscillatory electronic amplifying system (see Group XXXV) to vibrate the rod longitudinally at its lowest natural frequency. When the liquid or material level is below that of the rod, the rod vibrates freely at its maximum amplitude and no indicating or control signal current is produced by the amplifying system. When the vibrations are inhibited by the presence of liquid or material at the rod level, a current output from the system actuates a visible or audible high-level alarm or/and initiates control operations connected with the movement of liquid &c., into or out of the container. The rod may also be positioned at a low level and the system modified to give a lowlevel alarm and control. If the level of a material such as wet cement which may adhere to the rod is to be indicated or controlled, the rod is enclosed in a flexible envelope of such thickness that it collapses on to the rod when material is present but otherwise stands clear thereof. Furthermore, the vibrating rod may be disposed above the maximum level of material and be contacted by a rod projecting from a float carried on the material surface when the control level is reached.
