[Also in Groups XIX and XXXVI] A shaft coupling which transmits motion from a shaft 30 to a second shaft 2 without applying a rectilinear force to the shaft 2 is described in connection with a surface gauge (see Group XIX). The shaft 2 is mounted in V-blocks 10, 11 and rests on a ball 6. The lower end 4 of the shaft is cut away to a semi-circular section and a resilient metal strip 24 screwed against the plane face formed. Motion is transmitted by bevel gears 29, 20 and pins 22, 23 fastened to the gear 20 and acting on opposite sides of the strip 24.
