Abstract

820,791. Magnetrons. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 26, 1956 [Feb. 18, 1955 ; June 8, 1955], Nos. 4997/55 and 16406/55. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XXXV] A magnetron for generating micro-wave pulses with steep leading edges has a gas filling to indicate a secondary electron discharge from the cathode by ionic bombardment, and the gas pressure is utilized to determine the duration of current pulses 22, Fig. 3, produced by the discharge and thereby the duration of the microwave pulses when voltage pulses 19 are applied between the cathode and the anode of the magnetron. The gas pressure may be controlled by using a reversible gas generator 9, Fig. 1, which has a heater and control circuit for keeping the gas pressure constant (see Group XXXV). A suitable gas pressure is within the range 10-<SP>2</SP> to 10-<SP>6</SP> mm. Hg. and the gas may be hydrogen or an inert gas. The gas generator may comprise tungsten wire gauze coated with zirconium metal powder by electrophoresis. The cathode is cooled below the temperature at which primary emission occurs by circulating water through it or through the cathode support. The cathode may be operated at 600‹ to 700‹C. to prevent the deposition on it of copper eroded from the anode. The cathode material may be silver.
