Abstract
The invention comprises a process for the preparation of a detergent composition of low inorganic salt content, in which the reaction mixture obtained by sulphonation of an aromatic organic material having a C8-C20 alkyl group in the molecule, after removal of free sulphuric acid by a known process, is mixed with at least 20% of its own weight of a C1-C4 aliphatic alcohol and/or a C3-C4 ketone, or a mixture of two or more of the above alcohols, and/or ketones, an amount of water which is not greater than the weight of alcohol and/or ketone used, and an agent in an amount calculated as sufficient to react with the free sulphuric acid present in the reaction mixture so as to form a crystallizable sulphate, but not substantially more than sufficient to neutralize the free sulphuric acid completely, the precipitated material so obtained in the treated reaction mixture is separated, and the resulting sulphonic acid neutralized and worked up to the required product. The preliminary removal of the free sulphuric acid may be carried out, e.g. by settling and running off, or centrifuging. The process of the invention may be applied to e.g. sulphonation products of dodecylbenzene. Alcohols and ketones specified are methanol, ethanol, propanol, iso-propanol, butanol, iso-butanol, propylene glycol and acetone. Suitable neutralizing agents are caustic soda, soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, caustic potash, ammonia. The amount of agent used should be such that a crystallizable sulphate is formed such as the neutral or acid sulphates or double or mixed sulphates, preferably such that the acid sulphate is precipitated. The water, alcohol and/or ketone, and neutralizing, agent may be added to the pre-treated sulphonation product in any order. The sludge so precipitated may be removed, e.g. by centrifuging or filtering and is preferably washed with fresh alcohol and/or ketone, which is to be added to the next batch. The process may be carried out at 50-130 DEG F., and the purified product so obtained may be neutralized with any desired base. The alcohol and/or ketone used may be recovered by distillation from the neutralized, purified sulphonic acid, or left in the product. Examples are given of the application of the process of the invention to the product of the sulphonation with oleum of dodecylbenzene, and of a mixture of toluene and dodecylbenzene.
