Abstract
Lysine is prepared by contacting diaminopimelic acid with the enzyme diaminopimelic acid decarboxylase produced by Aerobacter aerogenes or a strain of Escherichia coli which does not require lysine for its growth and which lacks lysine decarboxylase. A suitable microorganism is Aerobacter aerogenes ATCC 12,409. Suitably the reaction mixture is maintained at about 28 DEG C. at about a neutral pH for approximately 24 hours. The enzyme may be liberated from the organism cells by standard methods, preferably by treatment with toluene, which need not be removed before the contact with diaminopimelic acid. The latter may be present in a fermented broth, such as is prepared in Specification 820,267.
