Abstract

[Also in Groups VIII, XXII and XXXIV] A turning couple is applied to each end of one of the rollers of a rolling machine acting in a plane containing the axis of the roller and the axis of a co-operating adjacent roller so as to tend to bend the first roller about its middle and thereby to compensate for or correct for de- ' flection caused during the rolling operation, the turning means being independent of the main bearings of the roller. The shaft of the roller 4, carried in bearings 7, is extended at 5, 6 and the extensions are enclosed by bearings 13 in housings 14 from each of which depends a lever arm 15. A turning couple, acting in the plane of the roller 4 and the adjacent roller 3, is applied to the shaft end by moving the end of the lever arm 15 under hydraulic pressure. Clamped by a semicircular plate 37 on the end of each lever arm is a hydraulic cylinder 16 in which is a double-acting piston 17 from which extend, in both directions, stems 18, 19 the rounded ends 41, 42 of which are in contact with facing plates 43, 44 on walls 45, 46 of a fixed bracket 47. The lever arm 15 is restrained from sideways movement by the engagement of projections 49 therefrom with slots formed in plates 51 fixed to the walls 45, 46. The lever arm 15 is free to float up and down between the walls 45, 46 to allow adjustment of the positions of the rollers by means of screws 10. Hydraulic fluid forced into the cylinder on one side of the piston or the other thus results in the application of force in either direction, as determined by a change over valve in the fluid pressure system. Each bearing 13 comprises two races of tapered rollers and a couple is applied by the top rollers of one race pressing downwards, and the bottom rollers of the other race pressing upwards on the shaft extension. To permit the roller 4 to bend it passes through plain bushes in the main bearings 7 with slight clearance ; or the bearings 7 may be selfaligning. By applying the same hydraulic pressure to both the cylinders 16 unbalanced axial forces on the bearings 7 are avoided. In a modification, instead of each lever arm 15 carrying a hydraulic cylinder fitted with a stationary piston, a single stationary cylinder may be provided midway between the two lever arms 15 and fitted with two spaced movable pistons respectively coupled to the arms. The turning couple may be applied to any one or more of the rollers of the machine.
