In a process for gasefying fuels in a bath of liquid slag circulated in a vessel by the flow energy of a gasefying agent, a superatmospheric pressure of at least 1 atmosphere, preferably 1.2-20 atmospheres, is maintained within the vessel. In an example coal is gasefied with oxygen and steam at 1.2 atmospheres gauge to obtain a gas having a composition of: CO 2 7.3%; CO 54.0%; H 2 36.7%; CH 4 0.6%; N 2 1.4%.
