Abstract

In a method of applying weld preventing material to a metal sheet, there is applied to a portion of the area of the sheet a material consisting of a dispersion of graphite, the major portion thereof having a particle size within the range 1/2 -50 microns, the graphite in the dispersion being within the range of 10-60 per cent by weight and the dispersion having an apparent viscosity of 10,000-180,000 centipoise and the coating is dried to form an adherent continuous elongated pattern area having a thickness corresponding to a dry coating density within the range 1/2 -2\ba1/2 milligrams per square centimetre. The particles are preferably mostly of the size 5-10 microns and are dispersed by e.g. water to give a solids content of preferably 30-40% by weight. The material may be brushed or printed or preferably applied by a squeegee over a silk screen having 86-162 holes per inch to deposit a film of preferably 1.3-1.4 milligrams per square centimetre when dried. A preferred material is an ammoniacal hydrosol product known under the Registered Trade Mark "Prodag," having particles mostly of 25-35 micron size. In an example two unalloyed softened aluminium sheets are cleaned by scratch brushing, the stop weld material is applied to one of the sheets in a passageway pattern by the single pass of a squeegee over a silk screen having 125 holes per inch and is dried to leave a coating of 1.33 milligrams per square centimetre.
