Abstract

692,592. Photographic paper. ELLIOTT & SONS, Ltd. Jan. 1, 1952 [Jan. 4, 1951], No. 311/51. Class 98 (ii). Photographic sheet material provided with a light-sensitive or image-bearing coating carries a thin layer of silica particles of. an average particle size of less than 1Á, e.g. <SP>1</SP>/ 7 Á or <SP>1/</SP> 40 Á, upon the surface of the coating, the density of the silica particles in the layer being such that they provide at least one million minute irregularities per square millimetre of the layer. The particles may be applied as a supercoat in the form of a gelatine sol containing an aqueous suspension of silica. The aqueous suspension of silica may be " Syton " (Registered Trade Mark) W-20 or 2-X. In examples: (I) to (3) paper coated with a light-sensitive gelatino silver halide emulsion is provided with a gelatine supercoat containing " Syton W-20 " and is shown to exhibit improved stripping in cold glazing; (4) paper bearing a gelatino silver halide emulsion in which the supercoat contains " Syton 2-X " exhibits similar improved stripping; (5) paper bearing a gelatino silver halide emulsion is processed and then bathed in aqueous " Syton W-20 " exhibits similar improved stripping; (6) similar paper having supercoats containing " Syton W-20 and " Syton 2-X exhibits improved antistatic properties compared with paper having plain supercoats and supercoats containing starch; and (7) similar paper having a supercoat containing " Syton W-20 " has improved resistance to abrasion.
