An appliance for holding a cow comprises two upright bars of which one 4 is fixed while the other 5 is rotatable about an offset axis, as by means of radius arms 8 pivoted to the main framework. Each movable rod has means, such as an extension lever 9 for moving it to or from its holding position and a number of these may be linked by a rod 12 so as to be operable by a common actuating lever 15.
