Abstract

819,460. Coated fabrics. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. Aug. 16, 1957 [Oct. 31, 1956], No. 25973/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. A base fabric is coated on one side with a coating comprising as the essential film-forming material natural rubber or a synthetic rubber and coated on the opposite side with a composition comprising chlorosulphonated polyethylene as the essential film-forming material. Specified synthetic rubbers include neoprene, butyl rubber, and copolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile and styrene. The base fabric may be of nylon, cotton, viscose rayon, polyacrylonitrile or polyethylene terephthalate. The coating materials may be applied as solutions or dispersions by dipping, spreading or calendering. The coated fabric is then dried and heated to cure the coatings. The finished product is particularly suitable for making tarpaulins, the chlorosulphonated polyethylene coating having considerable abrasion and wear resistance and the natural or synthetic rubber coating having good resistance to weather conditions. If desired a white or coloured pigment may be incorporated in the chlorosulphonated polyethylene coating in order to identify it as the abrasion resistant side. In an example a nylon fabric is first impregnated with a primer comprising neoprene, para-coumarone-indene resin, hexamethylene di-isocyanate, pigments, stabilizers and curing accelerators. It is then coated with a neoprene coating composition comprising neoprene latex, the mixed sodium salts of lauryl and myristyl sulphates, partially desulphonated sulphonated lignin, di-#-naphthyl-p-phenylone diamine, sulphur, thiocarbanilide, aluminium silicate, zinc oxide, carbon black, petroleum oil, oleic acid and ammonia. The dried coated fabric is dusted with talc. The other side is then coated with a chlorosulphonated polyethylene composition containing hydrogenated rosin, triethyl lead maleate, blanc fixe, carbon black, phthalic acid, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, 2-mercapto imidazoline and trioctyl phthalate. After drying and coating with tale the coated fabric is cured. Specification 574,903 is referred to.
