Abstract

The invention relates to the operation and stratification of materials of different specific gravities in a jig washer comprising a trough in which the strata are formed by settling upon the cessation of intermittent upward currents of a liquid medium, and consists in adding to the liquid medium five heavy solids to form a uniform suspension with an effective density (e.g. between 1.1 and 1.6) less than that of the lighter material to be separated, but such that the rate of settling of the lighter material is reduced to a greater extent than that of the heavier material. Some or all of the fine heavy solids may consist of tailings from a froth flotation plant, the underflow from a slurry screen, or crushed rock or shale, and before being added to the jig washer they may be passed through a cyclone classifier to remove the finest particles.
