Abstract

A process for concentrating an aqueous solution of urea comprises bringing the solution into a chamber under a reduced pressure of less than 100 mm. of mercury, under such temperature conditions that the solution of urea is caused to separate into solid urea and water vapour, and the greater part of the water is removed from the chamber by carrying off such water while it is in the vapour state. The temperature is controlled so that the solid urea is melted and continuously discharged at a temperature of not more than 145 DEG C. and preferably between 132 DEG and 137 DEG C. The water vapour is carried off in countercurrent by a gas such as air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or ammonia. In a typical example 600 kgs. per hour of 94.5 weight per cent of urea solution at a temperature of 122 DEG C. was admitted into a tubular steam jacketed evaporator of 2 mm. length and 30 cm. internal diameter at a pressure of 55 mm. of mercury. Water vapour was carried off at about 30 kgs. per hour and the melt was continously discharged at 136 DEG C. having a moisture content of 0.45 weight per cent and a biuret content of 0.7 per cent.
