Abstract
818,903. Shaft couplings. CREED & CO. Ltd. Jan. 10, 1958 [Jan. 14, 1957], No. 1283/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XL (b)] In facsimile apparatus the message-supporting drum 20 is coupled to the drive-shaft 4 via a linkage 5, 12 incorporating a spring 10 so that, when the synchronous drive motor 1 is connected to shaft 4 by operation of a clutch 3, the torque load applied to the motor is limited by extension of spring 10. Subsequent contraction of spring 10, after the drum has reached synchronous speed, to realign linkage 5, 12, results in an acceleration of the drum above synchronous speed with consequent overshoot against a resilient stop 6 and a period of oscillation before the drum settles down at the correct speed and phase position. In accordance with the invention this effect is prevented by the provision of an escapement mechanism 13, 14, 17 which is set into oscillation during the contraction of spring 10 to provide a braking force. The force which is proportional to the relative velocity of the two parts of the linkage is effective to reduce the velocity to zero at the instant of alignment so that no overshoot occurs. According to a modification (not disclosed in detail) spring 10 may be allowed to accelerate drum 20 through the aligned position and the braking means arranged to become effective in response to resilient stop 10 when it acts to restore alignment.
