Abstract
818,799. Fluid-actuated valves. BLAWKNOX CO. June 14, 1956, No. 18473/56. Class 135. A hinged plate valve controlling, e.g. air flow alternatively through a pair of conduits to an open-hearth, reversing furnace, comprises a valve body 15, Fig. 3, having an inlet 22 connected to a blower and outlet pipes 24 welded thereto leading to regenerators. The inner ends of the pipes 24 are obliquely faced to provide valve seats 25 between which a valve member 26 mounted on a shaft 40 may swing to seat on one or other of the seats. The valve member comprises a pair of spaced oval-shaped plates 32, connected together by bolts 34 and spacers 35 and a member 33 therebetween through which the lower four spacers pass with clearance. The member 33 is pivotally mounted on the shaft 40 and resiliently connected to the plates 32 by means of springs 42 surrounding the middle two spacers so that whichever plate is applied to its seat it will seat evenly thereon. Rubber gaskets 37 are fitted, one for each plate, to improve the sealing between the respective plate and its seat. The valve member is operable by a double-acting pneumatic motor 51, air being supplied to the motor by means of a solenoid-actuated valve and non-return check valves, one in each line 55, 56 to move a piston 50 connected by an arm 48 with the shaft 40. The check valves include a valve member 59, Fig. 8, having a restricted passage 60 therethrough to allow restricted exhaust from the appropriate end of the cylinder when the valve 59 is seated.
