Classes 79(2) and 79(5) In a vehicle in which the steering is effected by the application of independent brakes on differential half-shafts, the overall ratio of the change speed transmission is automatically lowered when one of the brakes is applied in order to meet the increased requirement of output torque. In one example of a vehicle having a hydraulic transmission with a variable displacement pump 1 connected through pipes 2, 3 to a hydraulic motor 2 driving a differential 23, the tilt angle of the pump 1 is automatically reduced when either of the brakes 10 is applied. The tilt angle is normally varied to alter the overall ratio by a lever 5 located by a releasable spring loaded pawl 13 and connected to an arm 8 of the pump through a push rod 6 which is pivotally connected to a block 10 slidably mounted in a slot 11 of the lever 5 and yieldably located by a spring 12. Steering is effected by levers 16 on each side of the vehicle which operate brake bands 17 through the rods 18. Each lever 16 has a cranked arm 27 engageable with the underside of a pad 26 on the push rod 6 so that movement of either lever 16 causes the rod 6 to move upwardly with the block 10 in the slot 11 and reduce the tilt angle of the pump 1. In a modification the arrangement may be applied to an epicyclic gearbox with overlapping friction bands the application of a brake causing the selection of a lower gear ratio.
