Abstract

Tablets of stable colour comprise acetyl salicylic acid, codeine or a salt thereof, for example, the phosphate, maize starch, talc, and a silicone fluid, for example, a polydimethylsiloxane, having a viscosity of from 1000 to 1,000,000 (preferably 50,000 to 200,000) centistokes, the proportion of silicone fluid to talc being from 4 to 20 per cent by weight, conveniently 8 to 12 per cent. Phenacitin or other oral medicaments may also be included. The silicone and talc is first mixed, for example, by adding a 25 per cent w./w. solution of the silicone in a volatile organic solvent, e.g. chloroform or carbon tetrachloride, to the talc and removing the solvent. This mixture is then mixed with the remaining ingredients and tableted. The silicone may also be mixed with the talc in the form of an aqueous emulsion, e.g. diluted "Releasil (Registered Trade Mark) No. 8."
