Abstract
818,122. Filters; waveguide couplings. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc. July 19, 1957 [Aug. 17, 1956], No. 22926/57. Class 40 (8). Two electromagnetic microwave transmission. lines of different and predominantly imaginary propagation constants are disposed parallel and adjacent one another and coupled together; one line being capable of carrying a broad frequency spectrum with several spaced bands of interest, and there are provided means for coupling the two lines and further means for equalizing the respective imaginary portions of the propagation constants, so that one only of said bands is coupled between the lines whilst coupling of the other bands is inhibited by making the propagation constants of the second channel real for these bands. A first waveguide 11 of circular cross-section is directionally coupled to the second waveguide 12 of rectangular cross-section by a plurality of coupling apertures 15 in a common wall 14. A series of equally spaced reactive elements in the form of identical metallic rods 13 extend transversely across the guide 12 in the region of the coupling apertures: the spacing therebetween being equal to half a wavelength of the middle frequency of the lowest of the uncoupled bands. The permeability of the rods 13 is a function of the pass band frequency fi and the spacing of the rods results in the formation of stop bands fj, fk in which the propagation constants of guide 12 is real and coupling between the guides is prevented.
