Abstract
706,234. Directional couplers for wave-guides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. March 14, 1952 [March 17, 1951; April 5, 1951], No. 6665/52. Class 40 (8) The coupling between the main wave guide 10, Fig. 1, and adjacent auxiliary waveguide B of a directional coupling apparatus, is in the form of an aperture 18 divided into a plurality of smaller spaces 19 by a plurality of dividers or wires 20. Aperture 18 is formed in an insert 17 which is placed in slot 16 in the adjacent walls 14 and 24 of wave guides 10 and 13 respectively. Various directional bandpass characteristics are obtained by either (i) varying the shape of the divided aperture 18, these shapes being limited to those simple geometric shapes for which the Fourier transforms utilized in obtaining their respective directivity characteristics are functions of a single angular variable and can be readily derived, e.g. rectangles, isosceles triangles, areas under co-sine or exponential curves, or various composites of these ; or (ii) varying the number of dividers or wires 20, per unit length. Control of the power coupling ratio without affecting the directivity characteristic is achieved by varying the size of the aperture 18 or by varying the total number of spaces 19. A modification is described having a multiplicity of closely spaced holes 19, Fig. 19, distributed longitudinally and transversely throughout the area of the divided aperture 18.
