Abstract

Latices of butyl rubber are formed by emulsifying a solution of the rubber with water in the presence of a fatty acid soap containing 12 to 24 carbon atoms, polyvinyl alcohol and a polyoxyethylated alkyl phenol containing 5 to 12 ethylene oxide units and in which the alkyl group contains 8 or 9 carbon atoms, then removing the butyl rubber solvent by stripping under vacuum at a temperature above 100 DEG F. The butyl rubber is a copolymer of isobutylene with a minor amount of a multiolefin, e.g. butadiene, isoprene, dimethyl butadiene, dimethallyl, myrcene or allo-ocimene, which is prepared at a low temperature in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The solvent for the rubber may be hexane, heptane, octane, isooctane, nonane, decane, naphtha or aromatic hydrocarbon fractions, benzene, toluene, Varsol, cyclohexane, cyclohexene, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, carbon disulphide or methyl ethyl ketone. The soap may be derived from oleic, palmitic, linoleic or stearic acid and sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium, caesium or ammonium hydroxides and may be made in situ. The composition is mixed in a suitable device, preferably a high-speed sonic mixer, at a raised temperature, and preferably in the presence of a small excess of hydroxide sufficient to raise the pH to 10 or 11. In an example, resorcinol and formaldehyde were added to an emulsion of the above type and a rayon tyre cord was coated with the composition. Comparative examples are given of forming latices of butyl rubber in the presence of sodium lauryl sulphate, ammonium alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, a polyoxypropylated glycol and a polyoxyethylated octyl phenol containing 4 ethylene oxide units together with one or two of the three essential components of the emulsifying system of the invention.
