Abstract

817,986. Gravity and inertia switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 21, 1958 [March 27, 1957], No. 10093/57. Class 38 (5). A gravity- or inertia-actuated switch comprises a metal casing 10 within which a brass contact bob 19 is supported at the centre of a ring contact 11 by a steel tube forming a cantilever spring 18. The tube 18 is secured in a brass bush 15 clamped by a nut 17 in an insulating bush 14. A copperplated steel wire 20, at least part of which is a close fit in the tube 18, forms an adjustable stiffener for calibration of the device by means of the threaded plug 21. A nut 25 on bush 15 provides a connection to the contact bob 19 while a screw (Fig. 2, not shown) on the casing 10 serves as a connecting terminal for the ring 11. The ring 11 can be centralized with respect to bob 19 by virtue of large clearance holes for the securing screws 12. The casing 10 is closed on a sealing ring 24 by an end cap 13 having a flexible diaphragm 22, and the device is completely filled with a silicone oil for damping vibrations of the bob 19. The stiffener 20 may alternatively extend from the free end of tube 18, the plug 21 being adjustable within a threaded bore in bob 19.
