Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0817877/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1 and R3 are hydrocarbon radicals which may be the same or different and may be substituted by one or more halogen atoms, R2 is an alkyl radical and R4 is a hydrogen atom or the group -COR5, wherein R4 is a hydrocarbon radical which may optionally be substituted by one or more halogen atoms and which may be the same as or different from that represented by R3), and the preparation thereof by acylating pyrimidine derivatives of the formula <FORM:0817877/IV (b)/2> with an acid anhydride or halide. When R4 represents-COR5, in which R5 is different from R3, the acylation may be effected, if desired, in two stages, acylation to give the mono-acyl derivative followed by acylation with a different acylating agent to give the di-acyl derivative, in which the two acyl groups are different. The products have anticonvulsant properties. In Examples (1) and (13), 1 : 3-diacetyl-5-ethyl-5-phenylhexahydropyrimidine-4 : 6-dione is made from 5 - ethyl - 5 - phenylhexahydropyrimidine-4 : 6-dione and acetic anhydride. Similarly made are: 1 : 3-dipropionyl-, 1 : 3-di-n-butyryl-, 1 : 3 - dicrotonyl -, 1 : 3 - di - (chloroacetyl) -, and 1 : 3 - dibenzoyl - 5 - ethyl - 5 - phenylhexahydropyrimidine - 4 : 6 - dione, 1 : 3 - diacetyl - 5 - (m - chlorophenyl) - 5 - ethylhexahydropyrimidine - 4 : 6 - dione, 5 : 5 - diethyl - 1 : 3 - dipropionylhexahydropyrimidine - 4 : 6 - dione, 1 - benzoyl - 3 - acetyl - 5 - ethyl - 5 - phenylhexahydropyrimidine-4 : 6-dione. Compounds made from 5-ethyl-5-phenylhexahydropyrimidine - 4 : 6 - dione using acid halides instead of acid anhydrides are : 1-benzoyl-, 1-phenylacetyl-, and 1 : 3-dicinnamoyl-5-ethyl-5-phenylhexahydropyrimidine - 4 : 6 - dione.
