Abstract

817,428. Printed circuits; electrical circuit assemblies. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug. 30, 1957 [Sept. 5, 1956], No. 27110/56. Class 37. [Also in Group XXII] A printed circuit comprises a plurality of flat metal strips, each having at least two tags projecting therefrom, located on one side of an insulating panel by the passage of the tags through holes in the panel and also supports a plurality of electrical components on the other side of the panel the leads of the components passing through holes in the panel and being electrically connected to the strips. In the Figure, 1 represents a length of metal strip, the part to the right of the Figure being shown with the majority of the projecting tabs 9 removed. There is also shown a length of strip cut-off from the continuous length 1 and in this strip the tags 10 are bent downwardly so that they will pass through appropriate apertures in the insulating panel 3. The panel 3 comprises a plurality of holes arranged in a co-ordinate array though not all possible locations in the co-ordinate array need be provided with holes. The strips are preferably, though not necessarily secured to the panel 3 by bending over the tabs on the undersurface of the panel. Components such as resistors, capacitors and interconnecting wires are arranged on the under-surface of the panel 3 in a direction transverse to the strips, their leads being passed through holes not occupied by the tabs and then bent over the strips to make contact therewith as appropriate. The leads are then secured to the strips by dipsoldering. The Specification also describes, Fig. 5 (not shown), a device for cutting-off unwanted tabs from the strip 1. The device may be programmed so that the strip can be fed to it continuously and the cutting operation performed automatically. A modified form of apparatus, Fig. 4 (not shown), is associated with a further device to which the strip is fed after the undesired tabs have been removed, this device automatically bending the tabs over as shown at 10. From here the strip, and such appropriate lengths may be fed to a further apparatus which positions them according to a programme in the correct position on the panel 3. Provision may also be made for inserting the components automatically in the circuit and then automatically dip-soldering them to the strips. In a modified form of circuit construction the tabs all extend from side of each strip and are not bent over so that in the completed circuit the strips are arranged with their planes perpendicular to the panel 3.
