Abstract

The invention comprises salts of diamines having the formula RNH(CH2)nNH2 and acids having the formula RNH(CH2)3NH-A-COOH, wherein A is a C2-3 divalent hydrocarbon radical, R is a C8-22 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or a hydrocarbon radical as derived from rosin or tall oil acids and n is an integer of from 2 to 5. The salts are prepared by neutralizing the acid with the diamine. R may be octyl, nonyl, decyl, undecyl, dodecyl, tridecyl, tetradecyl, pentadecyl, hexadecyl, heptadecyl, octadecyl, eicosyl, docosyl, octadecenyl, octadecadienyl, octadecatrienyl, mixtures thereof as derived from tallow, soybean oil or coconut oil, or hydrocarbon radicals derived from abietic acid, dehydroabietic acid, dihydroabietic acid and tetrahydroabietic acid. An example describes the preparation of a salt in which n is 3, A is -CH(CH3)CH2- and R is a mixture of hydrocarbon radicals as derived from tallow fatty acids. Diamine carboxylic acids of the formula RNH(CH2)3NH-A-COOH are prepared by reacting a diamine of the formula RNH(CH2)3NH2 with an appropriate lactone (e.g. b -propiolactone), or with acrylic, methacrylic or crotonic acid, or a salt or C1-4 alkyl ester thereof (subsequent hydrolysis to acid being necessary in the latter instance).
