Abstract
Compositions comprise vinyl chloride polymers and minor proportions of polyglycerols of molecular weight 300 to 7500 or an ester thereof with one or more carboxylic acids in which not more than 15 per cent of the hydroxyl groups have been esterified with a polycarboxylic acid. The polyglycerols may be prepared by heating glycerol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, e.g. sodium hydroxide, and distilling off the water liberated. The removal of the water is preferably assisted by passing a rapid stream of inert gas, e.g. nitrogen or carbon dioxide, through the reaction mixture. The polyglycerols may be esterified by heating with carboxylic acids, acid chlorides or anhydrides in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. benzene or p-toluene sulphonic acid. Specified acids are propionic, caproic, caprylic, lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic, maleic, malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic and sebacic, and mixtures, e.g. of propionic and lauric, and propionic and maleic acids. The compositions may contain plasticisers, lubricants, pigments, fillers and heat-stabilizers. Foils of the composition may be hot-press laminated to give sheets.
