Abstract
The invention comprises a process for purifying crude terephthalic acid, by heating the same with benzoic acid until solution occurs, cooling the resultant solution and allowing the terephthalic acid to crystallize out. The process may be conducted under atmospheric or super-atmospheric pressure, and the solution is conveniently cooled to 150 DEG C. before isolation of the crystallized terephthalic acid. The purification may be carried out in the presence of an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, and the mixture of acids is preferably agitated at least until the terephthalic acid dissolves. The process may be carried out in a titanium vessel, and may be preceded by a first purification by a known method, e.g. a simple recrystallization of crude terephthalic acid from water under super-atmospheric pressure, or extraction with suitable solvents, or oxidation, reduction treatment with periodic acid or lead tetra-acetate, or physical treatments such as absorption of impurities with carbon, to the benzoic acid solution of terephthalic acid prior to crystallization. The benzoic acid used may be recovered for use again by simple distillation. The process may be operated batchwise or continuously, and aqueous solutions of the benzoic acid may be employed. Examples are given of the purification of crude terephthalic acid which has been prepared by (1) air oxidation of p-xylene using cobalt and manganese bromides as catalysts in (a) benzoic acid, (b) acetic acid, (c) propionic acid; (2) nitric acid oxidation of p-xylene; (3) air oxidation of p-diisopropyl benzene; (4) air oxidation of p-xylene; and (4) dismutation of potassium benzoate.
