816,470. Hydraulic jacks. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 25, 1958 [March 25, 1957], No. 9533/58. Class 69 (2). In an hydraulic jack for use in circumstances in which it is subject to high ambient temperatures, a flow of liquid is maintained through the jack piston-rod to cool it during operation of the jack. A cylinder 10 is divided into chambers 14, 16 by a piston 12 formed with a hollow rod 26. A flush tube 36 is secured in the rod and receives telescopically a tube 50 fast with the cylinder. To extend the jack, liquid is supplied through passages 82, 78, 80 to chamber 14. Liquid from chamber 14 passes through ports 42, a clearance 44, ports 37, tubes 36, 50, and passages 76, 70, 68 to a space 66, and thence through a clearance between a bushing 62 and the piston-rod, which bushing permits a restricted flow of liquid to chamber 16. Chamber 16 is open to exhaust through passages 60, 54, 56. To retract the jack, passages 56 and 82 are connected to pressure and exhaust, and the flow through the piston-rod is reversed. Since the piston-rod moves through the bushing 62 any foreign matter lodging in the clearance between these parts is removed during jack actuation.
