Class 123(1) A dipstick 1 for an oil sump 6 is normally retracted into a protecting casing 2 by a spring 4 as shown in Fig. 1. When the oil level is to be determined the dipstick is pushed out of the casing by hand pressure on a knob 3 until the knob strikes the top of the casing, Fig. 2. Two fingers are then engaged under finger grips 7 provided on the casing to hold the dipstick fully extended and the casing with the dipstick is withdrawn from the sump to allow the levels to be read.
