Abstract

A method of coagulating colloidal aqueous suspensions of lignin particles in insoluble form consists in freezing a quantity of such a suspension to a completely solid state to effect coagulation of the lignin particles, and thawing the solid to produce a slurry containing readily-filterable lignin particles. Examples: (1) A quantity of purified sodium lignin salt obtained by the sulphate process from conifers was dissolved and the solution acidified (pH 1 to 2) to produce a lignin slurry. The slurry was cooled to - 20 DEG C., was maintained at this temperature for 20 hours, and thereafter thawed. The filtration time was considerably reduced. (2) The starting material was a lignin obtained by the soda process; this was dissolved in dilute sodium hydroxide solution and the solution acidified to produce a slurry which was then treated as in (1) above. (3) The sodium lignin salt of Example (1) above was converted to a slurry of the calcium salt by solution in sodium hydroxide solution and treatment with a solution of calcium chloride dihydrate. This slurry was treated as before. (4) A quantity of the sodium lignin salt of Example (1), in an oxidized state, was dissolved in alkali and the resulting solution acidified to produce the slurry. The slurry was frozen overnight at - 20 DEG C., thawed and filtered.ALSO:A method of coagulating colloidal aqueous suspensions of lignin particles in insoluble form consists of freezing a quantity of such a suspension to a completely solid state to effect coagulation of the lignin particles, and thawing the solid to produce a slurry containing readily-filterable lignin particles. This slurry was treated as before. (4) A quantity of the sodium lignin salt of example (1), in an oxidised state, was dissolved in alkali and the resulting solution acidified to produce the slurry. The slurry was frozen overnight at -20 DEG C., thawed and filtered. Freezing after heating and freezing after filtering are ineffective. Heat-sensitive pharmaceutical solutions may be clarified by dissolving lignin therein, acidifying the lignin solution, freezing and thawing, and filtering off the coagulated lignin along with any entrained or adsorbed material associated therewith.
