Abstract
Glutamic acid is prepared by a process comprising the hydrolysis of Steffen's filtrate and recovery of the glutamic acid from the resulting hydrolysate, wherein, prior to the hydrolysis, a major proportion of the calcium present in the Steffen's filtrate is precipitated with an alkali metal (including ammonium) carbonate, bicarbonate, phosphate, bisulphite or sulphite and separating the resultant precipitate from the filtrate. This purification facilitates the ultimate recovery of glutamic acid. The precipitating agent may be used in solid form or aqueous solution. After removal of the precipitated calcium, e.g. by filtration, the Steffen's filtrate may be hydrolysed by alkali or acid, e.g. sodium carbonate, sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid. The hydrolysate is then treated to remove inorganic salts and glutamic acid recovered by crystallization. An example is given.
