Abstract

815,883. Cathode -- ray storage tubes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Aug. 2, 1957 [Aug. 30, 1956], No. 24559/57. Class 39(1). A storage tube has a barrier grid comprising a plurality, greater than two, of arrays of parallel wires, the wires of each array being at an angle to the wires of the other arrays. In one embodiment a storage tube 10, Fig. 1, has a collector 18, shield 19, and a target assembly 20 consisting of an electrode 22, dielectric sheet 23 and grid 24. The grid structure comprises four distinct layers of tungsten wires lying in parallel planes, each layer consisting of parallel wires arranged so that the wires in the array nearest the electron gun are oriented at 90 degrees, 45 degrees, 135 degrees, with those of the other arrays, as shown in Fig. 2, the arrays being in contact with each other and the bottom array being in contact with sheet 23. A charge pattern is laid down by scanning the target while the input signal is applied to plate 22. Reading or detecting the output signal is accomplished by measuring the net target current or the secondary electron current alone while the target is again scanned, the plate 22 being held at a constant potential.
