A table 3 includes a bore 4 with a vertical axis along which a compression plunger 13 carrying a godet 12 filled with cosmetic powder is movable, a movable block 6 closing the upper end of the bore so as to obtain compression of the powder when the plunger is raised. A first layer of paper is arranged across the closing face of the block 6 to permit passage of air normal to its surface but not powder when this is compressed and a second layer of porous woven material is disposed between the paper and the block 6 to support the first layer and to allow lateral escape of air forced through the paper. For this purpose there is provided a feed roller 15 and a take-up roller 16, a strip 17 of nylon fabric passing from one to the other via the surface of the block 6. Similarly the paper layer is fed in the form of a strip 18 from a feed roller 19 to a take-up roller 20. As the paper strip tends to be damaged at each compression, a chain 21 which is reciprocated in synchronism with the plunger 14 passes about a sprocket wheel to a tension spring 23, the sprocket wheel being coupled by a uni-directional drive, e.g. a pawl and ratchet wheel device, to the take-up roller 20 which is thus turned sufficiently at each compression to bring a fresh portion of the paper strip 18 into position under block 6. The nylon strip 17 can stand up to a large number of compressions before it becomes damaged and hence need only be shifted from time to time by turning the take-up roller 16.
