Abstract
814,958. Stuffing-box substitutes. ZILLER, H. June 6, 1955, No. 16227/55. Class 122 (5). A ball or roller bearing is sealed by a sealing ring comprising a holding portion 2 pressed against one of the bearing races 14 and connected by a resilient connecting member 3 to a rim portion 1 having a sealing edge contacting a side face of the other race 9, the sealing ring being completely enclosed by a thin coating 6 of resilient synthetic plastic which, in operation, is split open at the sealing edge by the pressure of the ring at 7 against the race 9 so that it forms two flexible sealing lips 10 bearing on the race. The sealing ring may be provided at its inner edge with either a bead 13, Fig. 6, of the coating material or an axial sleeve 16, Fig. 8, having a relatively thick coating 17 on its inner periphery. The resilient connecting member 3 may be of the same material as the holding and rim portions, for example steel, copper or brass, or a different material thereto may be formed either by spokes or a resilient annular disc which may be a slotted disc as in Figs. 9 and 10 or a spirally wound wire 20 as in Fig. 20, the holding and rim portions being formed either by flattening the ends of the spiral or, as shown, by metal rings 23, 24, soldered to the spiral. The spaces between the spokes, the slots in the disc and the space between adjacent convolutions of the spiral may be filled with resilient synthetic plastic.
