814,669. Electric digital-data-storage apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 25, 1957 [May 9, 1556], No. 14341/56. Class 106 (1). In data-storage apparatus comprising a plurality of endless record tracks a number of reading heads are arranged in relation to a plurality of quick-access tracks so that data stored in duplicate can be read off in any order and space is left to allow at least one other fixed or movable head to co-operate with one or more storage tracks adjacent the quick-access tracks. As described, the quick-access track is duplicated and immediate access is obtained by providing sixty-four reading heads to co-operate with the sixty-four-word tracks. The heads are separated into four groups 0 ... 15, 16 ... 31, 32 ... 47, 48 ... 63, Fig. 3, alternating between the duplicated tracks A and B so that space is left for stacked reading heads R1, R2, R3, R4 and writing heads W1, W2, W3, W4, which co-operate with storage tracks (not shown) lying between and adjacent to the tracks A and B. Data is written on to track A by a writing head 63 and then duplicated in track B by coupled read and write heads 15. In Fig. 4 the groups of quick-access heads are aligned so as to provide a clear space for heads R5, R6, &c. which may be of the movable type described in Specification 745,496, [Group XXXV].
